I took this on the way home from Parys today. I think it's the perfect picture to sum up the current power crisis in South Africa. You can faintly see the power lines in the distance.
There have been many jokes in the recent weeks about how South Africa will be plunged into the dark ages if Eskom doesn't do something fast about the power problems we're having. We have power cuts almost on a daily basis and for hours at a time, because there's no capacity. It's not funny actually, because productivity in all industries is falling drastically and there's going to be a serious impact on the economy very soon.

Did you see the recent Madam and Eve, where they were discussing governments practice of either shutting down or changing the names of departments that do not perform. The punchline was Pres Mbeki defending his decision to shut Eskom down, because no one would notice anyway.
You just have to love the sharp wit of the Madam and Eve team
all we need to do is go to bed earlier!!! didn't you listen to our very much cleverer minister!!!??!
I love the green in the countryside right now. Wish winter would never come
Ya, it is serious, but it is with us for a long time, so I understand the need to joke about it rather than implode from growing frustration! Have you heard that Escom has issued a new directive? We are no longer allowed to refer to areas as having a "blackout." We now have to call them "previously lit areas." ;)
