Even though the resident association has cleaned it up and ensure that the municipality cuts the grass etc, I'm not sure I'd let my kids play here without supervision. There are a lot more people walking dogs in the area now, and taking walks down paths through the veld, but I still don't think it's safe enough for kids.
I was very surprised to see these kids playing. They chatted to me for a while and asked me why I was taking photos. I told them about my photo-a-day thing, and then said that I played there as a child which is why I wanted to take photos of the area. The one boy then told me that they go to the Afterschool centre across the road, but the garden is too small, and they wanted to play in the "free world" so they walked out to play in the veld. OMW! I wouldn't be very happy if I were their parents and their carers just let them play in the veld!!

Reminds me so much of the sloot next the house I was raised in in Pretoria ... we spent whole days exploring the area on our own as kids! Another time, huh?
love the photos....and oh my yes....I would be ticked my my child was aloud to leave where I thought she was. eeekkkk
These photo's are very pretty! I really like the second one.
As for the boys the school really should have sent someone with them....that's terrible, bad things happen so fast in SA!
Nice post Jenty. The days of letting young kids (speaking as a grandfather) roam around freely is definitely over - maybe I am being over protective, but I don't think so. It is a sad indictment of crime in our country.
