Newspaper seller

grateful fridaygif

This is the first time I'm taking part in Grateful Friday. I've seen it on a few blogs that I read, and after reading this blog this morning, I decided to join in.

Every time I go past one of the street newspaper sellers, I thank my lucky stars that I had the education that I did, and that I can do what I do.
These guys stand out in the traffic in all kinds of weather selling papers to earn a meagre wage. They live a very harsh life.

I see this particular man everyday on my way home from work (I took this photo on Wednesday evening). He not only sells papers himself; he also sometimes gives newspapers to street kids to help him sell a bit more, and I assume they take a cut of the sales as well.
We have all kinds of street hawkers in this country, that sell all types of goods in the traffic - the man behind the paper seller in the traffic is selling bouncy balls. A lot of these guys are very highly educated immigrants from other African countries who cannot find work here.

that is a great photo... and I often think about how different my life culd have been had I made different decisions or been born to a different family or in a different country. We are indeed lucky to have what we have.

One chilly morning I stopped at a robot I drive past every morning, the newspaper seller promptly walked around my car and wiped down my frosted up rear window. I had never purchased a newspaper from him or spoken to him before. I sent my husband back that way to give him money for 'no reason' so that his random act of kindness would be rewarded with what seemed to be another.

I'll never forget that.

Awesome pic Jeanette
I find the hawkers selling newspapers friendly and they don't hassle you into buying one. If only more hawkers were like them...
I like your topic for Grateful Friday :)

glad to hear that they don't hassle people. I get so anxious around people trying to sell me things.

You are so right Jenty. When I see all the street vendors I count my blessings.
I was in Joburg this week and am grateful for living in PE. After an hour and a half in traffic, to do a 20 minute trip, I missed my flight by 10 minutes and had to get a later one home - I don't know how you do it up there.

We should all be thanking our lucky stars we're not in that boat. I'd be a poor seller----not aggressive enough! And then I'd have nothing to eat that evening. It's a hard life, to be sure.
